Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has announced she is withdrawing from public advocacy on national issues, declaring in a series of Instagram Stories posts that Nigerians are not worth fighting for. The actress, long known for calling out insecurity, corruption and poor governance, said repeated online attacks over her political comments have pushed her to step away.

The actress’s latest remarks reportedly followed her criticism of what she called systemic political corruption in Nigeria, with particular focus on double taxation — the reality of citizens paying taxes yet still funding basic infrastructure and services themselves while public money is allegedly mismanaged. “So after they work hard to earn and then pay their taxes, they should help the government to provide a better life for the masses. While the tax collected is meant for some family members. This country has stretched my mental health to its limits,” she wrote.

Her comments also appeared to be a response to First Lady Remi Tinubu, who had called on top stars such as Davido and Burna Boy to support initiatives aimed at lifting Nigerians out of poverty. Jegede questioned why hardworking, tax-paying citizens should be expected to shoulder responsibilities that belong to the government.

Addressing the wave of criticism that followed, she said she now understands why many public figures stay silent. “The more I speak of the uncommon things I see happening in my country, the more people drag me. I see why people stay quiet in times of crisis. I wasn’t born to look the other way when humanity is being trampled upon, but you see Nigerians aren’t worth fighting for because bigotry is the order of the day,” she added.
