The United States Men’s National Team secured their place in the World Cup knockout stage with a resilient 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, advancing to the Round of 16 in spite of playing the final 26 minutes with a numerical disadvantage. Red Card Overshadows Balogun Goal Against Bosnia

The 24-year-old Monaco striker broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, reacting sharply inside the penalty area to a deflected pass and sliding the ball beyond Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj for his third goal of the tournament. It was a moment of clinical instinct from the forward, who had already seen a 32nd-minute effort correctly ruled out for offside after pouncing on a loose ball.

The drama, however, arrived in the 64th minute when Balogun was shown a red card following a reckless challenge on defender Tarik Muharemovic that caught the Bosnian with his studs. The dismissal suddenly handed Bosnia and Herzegovina a significant opportunity to claw their way back into the contest, and goalkeeper Matt Freese — making only his second World Cup start — had already been tested earlier in the match with saves to deny Ermedin Demirovic and Kerim Alajbegovic.

Despite their numerical edge, Bosnia struggled to find a way through a well-organised American defensive unit, with experienced striker Edin Dzeko finding little space or service up front. Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s side absorbed the pressure with considerable discipline and composure.

How the USA Sealed It

Any remaining Bosnian hope was extinguished eight minutes from full time when Malik Tillman stepped up to a free-kick positioned just beyond the edge of the box and curled a stunning effort into the top corner, leaving Vasilj with no chance. The goal sent the home crowd into celebration and effectively closed out the contest.

Throughout the first half, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams had controlled the midfield tempo, helping the US dominate possession against a disciplined Bosnian defensive structure. The win also ended a ten-game losing streak for the United States against European opposition stretching back to 2022. The USMNT will now face Belgium in Seattle on Monday, 6 July, in the Round of 16, while Bosnia’s debut tournament run came to a close.
