Veteran Nollywood actress Clarion Chukwurah has addressed an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commending his administration’s push toward establishing State Police while making a passionate case for economic reform as a necessary companion to security efforts. The letter, which the actress shared on social media, has since ignited widespread conversation among Nigerians who share her concerns about poverty and crime.

What Chukwurah Said

In her lengthy message, the actress expressed genuine optimism about the proposed creation of State Police, arguing that devolving policing powers to individual states could translate into faster, more localised responses to threats such as kidnappings and violent crimes — challenges that have become particularly acute in rural and remote communities across Nigeria.

However, Chukwurah was equally emphatic that policing reforms alone cannot resolve the country’s deep-rooted security crisis. She pointed to widespread poverty and unemployment as fundamental forces feeding criminal activity, capturing the disconnect between ordinary Nigerians and their government in a pointed line: “Sir, the average Nigerian living in poverty does not believe that you are not the enemy, or understand that there are challenges your government has to face.”

The actress further called on the Federal Government to direct a portion of the National Security Emergency Intervention Fund toward community self-defence groups and vigilante organisations, particularly in areas where conventional security agencies are stretched thin and unable to respond effectively.

Her Broader Appeal

Beyond security architecture, Chukwurah appealed for robust job creation programmes targeting young Nigerians, stressing that economic empowerment must be treated as an integral pillar of any lasting security strategy rather than a separate policy concern. According to reports, she framed unemployment among the youth as one of the most urgent vulnerabilities the country faces.

She concluded her letter by appealing to both President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to remain committed to building a Nigeria that is not only safer but more compassionate toward its most vulnerable citizens. Her message reportedly resonated widely online, with many Nigerians echoing her dual call for security reform and meaningful poverty alleviation.
