The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has put the governments of Kebbi, Katsina and Zamfara states on notice, threatening to withdraw its members’ services across seven state-owned universities if outstanding financial obligations owed to lecturers are not urgently settled. The warning has triggered fresh anxiety among students and parents who fear yet another round of disruptions to the academic calendar.

According to reports, ASUU has grown increasingly frustrated with what the union describes as a sustained disregard for the welfare of its members in the three states. Lecturers in the affected universities are reportedly still owed a range of financial entitlements, including earned academic allowances, promotion arrears, wage awards, and salary adjustments that have remained unresolved despite multiple rounds of engagement with the respective state governments.

The union noted that repeated assurances from the state governments had so far failed to translate into any concrete action, leaving lecturers demoralised and the institutions struggling to function smoothly. ASUU made clear that if the governments do not take immediate steps to clear these debts, an industrial action may become unavoidable.

What It Means for Students
