Sarr then added a second at the start of the second half, composedly finishing after bringing down a long ball played by Moussa Niakhaté. Belgium’s fortunes changed significantly after Romelu Lukaku was introduced at halftime. The striker pulled one back by turning in a low cross from Thomas Meunier at the near post, and Tielemans then drew the sides level by heading home a delivery from Leandro Trossard, forcing the game into extra time.

The decisive moment arrived deep into the additional period when Lamine Camara slid in on Tielemans as he attempted to deal with a dangerous cross. A VAR check confirmed the foul had occurred inside the penalty area, and the referee awarded a spot kick. Tielemans stepped up and drove the ball into the top corner to complete the turnaround.

What It Means for Both Teams

For Belgium, the victory keeps their hopes of a first World Cup title very much alive. They now advance to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the contest between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Senegal’s exit is a bitter blow for African football at this tournament. The Teranga Lions became the fourth African side to be eliminated in the Round of 32, joining South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, and DR Congo in exiting the competition at that stage — a sobering outcome for a team that had looked dominant for long stretches of a memorable encounter.
