Colombia have booked their place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 after edging out Ghana 1-0 in a hard-fought round-of-32 clash played in Kansas City. Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the first half, sending the South Americans through to a last-16 showdown with Switzerland while ending Ghana’s tournament hopes.

Arias Volley Establishes Early Lead For Colombia

The game was barely underway when both sides were forced into unplanned changes. Colombia lost striker Jhon Cordoba to a groin injury and brought on Luis Suarez as his replacement, while Ghana’s Marvin Senaya was stretchered off with a hamstring problem, with Alidu Seidu stepping in for him.

Colombia wasted little time in making their pressure count. In the 14th minute, Suarez drove forward along the right flank and whipped a cross to the far post, where Arias arrived unmarked and guided a composed volley into the net. Seidu had failed to track the run, and Colombia had the lead they would not relinquish.

Ghana’s best moments were few and fleeting. Thomas Partey launched a long-range attempt that drifted just wide, and Antoine Semenyo had a shot deflected over the bar, but the Black Stars were unable to seriously threaten Colombia’s backline. Goalkeeper Lawrence Zigi, however, kept his side in contention before the break by pulling off a fine save to deny Johan Mojica’s header, while Luis Diaz and Suarez also squandered chances to put the game beyond reach.

Second Half Dominance and Ghana’s Exit

Colombia came out after the interval with the same purposeful intent. Richard Rios, Gustavo Puerta, and Diaz all went close to adding a second goal, and Diaz had a strike ruled out for offside before being thwarted by Zigi in a one-on-one situation. The goalkeeper was arguably Ghana’s standout performer, making several crucial interventions to prevent a heavier defeat.

Despite the missed opportunities, Colombia’s grip on the contest was never seriously loosened. Ghana finished the match without registering a single shot on target — a damning reflection of their struggles going forward. Their elimination makes them the eighth African nation to bow out of the tournament, leaving the continent with only two representatives in the last 16.

Colombia, meanwhile, advance in confident form and will turn their attention to Switzerland as they chase a place in the quarter-finals.
