Brymo Slams Burna Boy, Alleges His Grammy Win Was “Bought”
Nigerian singer Brymo has taken aim at Burna Boy in a new interview with NotJustOk’s NotJustVerses series, criticising a lyric in which the Grammy winner mentioned his name and questioning the legitimacy of the award itself. The vocalist said he personally confronted Burna Boy over the line and dismissed the honour with the claim that it was “bought.”
Brymo Claims Burna Boy Bought His Grammy
Speaking during the interview, Brymo addressed a controversial Burna Boy lyric that referenced his name and implied his career had declined. He said he was stunned that an artist at Burna Boy’s level would put such a line in a song, describing the bar as “mediocre.” “I was surprised that he is flying so high and he did not realize how mediocre how that was. I should be that important,” he said.
Brymo revealed that he raised the issue with Burna Boy directly, telling him he would never return the gesture in his own music. “I told him your name no go ever appear for my song,” he stated, adding, “You’re not that important.”
He then turned his attention to Burna Boy’s Grammy Award, downplaying its significance with a striking allegation. “You won a Grammy and so what? It was bought. Who’s your mate,” he said. Widening his criticism of the awards industry, Brymo alleged that he was once asked to pay $10,000 in connection with a BET Awards nomination or recognition, saying, “I’ve been told to pay $10k for a BET Awards before. I don’t care what fraternity you belong to.”
Award Integrity Faces New Scrutiny
Brymo is a well-known figure in Nigerian music, respected for his distinctive alternative sound and outspoken views, while Burna Boy stands among the country’s biggest global exports. Public friction between two prominent artists of this profile tends to dominate fan conversation and can shape narratives around both careers.
Beyond the personal exchange, the remarks are likely to reopen debate about how international awards are decided and how transparent those processes are — a recurring point of contention among artists and fans alike. Neither claim has been independently verified, and the comments reflect Brymo’s account as reported.
