A three-storey student hostel known as Elite Five Star Lodge caved in late Sunday night in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, according to reports. The building, which housed students of the Federal Polytechnic Oko, came down in the Amokpala area of the town, close to Tonimas Filling Station, leaving an unknown number of occupants feared buried in the debris.

Panic reportedly swept through the neighbourhood as the structure crumbled, with cries for help heard from beneath the wreckage. Residents and fellow students gathered at the scene as emergency responders mobilised within a short time of the collapse.

Personnel from the Anambra State Police Command, the Anambra State Fire Service, the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other response units converged on the site to lead the search. Several occupants were brought out alive and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, while teams continued to sift through the rubble for anyone still unaccounted for.

Authorities have yet to release any figures on casualties or missing persons, stressing that the numbers remain uncertain while the operation is still underway. Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, saying security operatives sealed off the area and were working hand in hand with emergency agencies. He urged the public to stay away from the site, cooperate with responders and avoid spreading unverified claims, promising official updates as facts are established.
