According to reports, Mount seemed to be moving comfortably before he was seen in conversation with United’s medical team and then made his way down the tunnel. Whether the substitution was purely precautionary has not been confirmed, but given that the 27-year-old has totalled only 72 appearances across three seasons at Old Trafford — roughly 24 outings per campaign — alarm bells were always likely to ring.

The evening had started badly for United’s defence, too. PSG struck inside two minutes when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia found room on the right, before Dro Fernandez linked with Ibrahim Mbaye, who applied the finish. Harry Maguire and teenage centre-back Ayden Heaven found the attack difficult to contain, and Carrick reshuffled at the interval, sending on Leny Yoro for Heaven and Diogo Dalot for Noussair Mazraoui. Heaven, 19, endured a tough night that featured a stray pass, a foul on Kvaratskhelia and a yellow card.

United eventually found a response through Bryan Mbeumo, whose equaliser made it eight goals under Carrick when pre-season fixtures are included — every one of them scored while playing as a striker. There were other positives, too: Youri Tielemans made his first appearance for the club and brought calm to midfield, notably threading a smart pass that opened up a chance for Bruno Fernandes, while Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly expected to rejoin the group for a training camp in Dublin.

Why Midfield Depth Remains Carrick’s Central Question

Pre-season friendlies are ultimately about fitness and experimentation rather than results, which is why the injury picture tends to matter far more than the scoreline. For a club of United’s stature, the summer window is judged on whether obvious gaps are addressed, and the absence of a natural defensive midfielder leaves the inexperienced Andrey Santos shouldering a heavy load.

Reports suggest United have taken a measured approach in the transfer market so far, but performances like this one tend to intensify the public debate around recruitment. With Mount’s availability again in doubt, the case for another midfield signing before the season begins appears stronger than ever.
