Delta Governor’s Aide Ossai Ovie Success Urges Nigerian Graduates to Embrace Any Legitimate Work, Regardless of Status

Ossai Ovie Success, who serves as Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, has taken to social media to encourage Nigerian graduates to shed any sense of occupational pride and take up whatever honest work is available to them. In his post, Ossai made the case that many jobs widely considered low-profile can generate far more income than most people assume.

The Gateman Who Earns Nearly Half a Million Monthly

To drive his point home, Ossai pointed to a real-life example from within his own residential estate. According to him, the gateman stationed there collects a fixed monthly salary of ₦70,000 — a figure that, on its own, might appear modest. However, the worker has built a network of additional income streams that dramatically inflate his total earnings.

In a post online, Ossai explained that the estate comprises 16 flats and approximately 15 vehicles. Rather than have residents travel to a commercial car wash, the gateman washes those vehicles daily at a rate of ₦1,000 per car — a price residents reportedly find more convenient and cost-effective. Beyond that, the worker handles laundry for five residents every weekend, charging ₦1,500 per person for the service. When all these earnings are tallied alongside his base salary, Ossai estimated the gateman’s combined monthly income comes to nearly ₦550,000.

Ossai used this example to reinforce a broader argument: that a university degree should never function as a barrier to seizing available opportunities. He stressed that graduates who allow educational qualifications to fuel a sense of superiority risk missing out on legitimate and lucrative means of earning a living.

A Caution Against Judging Others by Their Occupation

Beyond the financial angle, Ossai also issued a social warning, urging Nigerians to resist the temptation to measure a person’s worth or prosperity by the nature of their job. He noted that individuals who appear to be struggling may, in reality, be earning considerably more than those who look down on them.

According to reports, he further called on Nigerians to pursue every legal avenue available for generating income, insisting that no form of honest work is beneath anyone’s dignity, regardless of their academic background or social standing.
