The former candidate described the alleged spending as a sign of “grand corruption,” pointing to a recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) consultation report as the basis for his claim.

IMF Document Triggers Obi’s Fresh Corruption Accusations

In his reaction to the IMF document, Obi reportedly stated that the expenditure was not captured in the budget and was therefore carried out without legislative oversight or proper administrative checks. He put the sum at roughly 2% of Nigeria’s GDP, noting that it exceeds 35% of the country’s 2025 capital budget and surpasses the combined allocations for education and health.

The former Labour Party flagbearer argued that money on that scale, if properly managed, could have been directed towards healthcare, schools, infrastructure and job creation rather than going unaccounted for. He also alleged that the situation reflects a broader pattern of corruption under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which he said has fallen short of Nigerians’ expectations.

“The IMF now reveals that about ₦8.83 trillion in expenditure undertaken in 2025 is not reflected in the budget,” he said, adding that the APC-led government is “grossly corrupt, incompetent, and insensitive.” He called on citizens to “rise within the law and hold this administration to account,” stressing that a responsible government would spend such funds prudently amid growing poverty and pressing infrastructure needs.
