Davido Says His Biggest Fear Is Not Knowing When to Quit Music

Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about the anxiety that shadows his success, admitting that his greatest fear is failing to recognise the right moment to walk away from music. In a recent interview, the award-winning singer said watching his close friend Cristiano Ronaldo face intense online abuse after the FIFA World Cup fundamentally reshaped how he thinks about fame and longevity.

Ronaldo’s World Cup Backlash Left a Mark on Davido

Reflecting on the emotional weight of public life, Davido said the constant demand to remain relevant had inspired an unusual dream: building a therapy centre for people who once enjoyed enormous success but later struggled outside the spotlight. “If there were one thing I could build, I would build a school, not a school, like a centre for people that have been popular and very successful before. A centre for them to have therapy,” he said.

The singer argued that the public underestimates how brutal the fall from admiration can be, noting that even those at the very top are rarely spared. “It’s crazy, being on top of the world and the next moment you’re lost. Even with football. You win all these awards, you win the Champions League, you win the World Cup, and people still feel like it’s not enough,” he explained.

He singled out Ronaldo’s experience as the moment that hit hardest. “Look at Ronaldo. He’s my friend, by the way, my very good friend. When he left the World Cup, I remember being on the internet and seeing them abuse him so much. After everything he has done,” Davido recalled, adding that seeing one disappointing tournament overshadow a legendary career deeply pained him.

That episode, he said, now drives a personal prayer. “That’s my greatest fear. I worked too hard for me to come and spoil it for something. So I always ask God, ‘God, just tell me the right time to pack it up.’ But I think that’s the only thing I’m scared of.”

Why Davido’s Honesty About Fame Struck a Chord

Davido stands among the most recognisable figures in Afrobeats, a genre that has carried Nigerian music onto global stages, which makes his vulnerability on this subject especially striking. Conversations about mental health and life after stardom remain rare among African celebrities, and according to reports, his remarks quickly resonated with fans online, with many praising him for voicing what public figures seldom admit and agreeing that stars need emotional support long after the applause fades.
